Florida Women's Basketball Hosts the Annual WBCA Pink Zone Game

The Florida Women's Basketball team is proud to once again be a part of the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative as it hosts Mississippi State on Sunday, February 7th at 1 PM in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The 2009-2010 season marks the third consecutive year the Gators have participated in this initiative which assists in raising breast cancer awareness around the country.

Join the teams and both coaching staffs and wear pink! All fans who wear pink to the game will be able to purchase a general admission ticket for just $1! Or, log on to www.GatorZone.com to print off a $1 general admission coupon. Another option is the Family 4 Pack in which fans may purchase 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, and 4 sodas for only $20! Visit any area Verizon Wireless location to pick up a free admission coupon or receive free admission by bringing an old cell phone to the game to donate to the Verizon Wireless Hopeline program.

The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive pink shakers! Plus, the first 500 fans at the game receive Gator beanie hats courtesy of Verizon Wireless! Members of the University Police Department will be on-hand for Child Safety Day. Bring your child to get finger-printed and learn safety tips.

The American Cancer Society will be on-site with a display to help increase cancer awareness and answer questions. Fans are encouraged to make pledges to the American Cancer Society to support cancer research, education and local patient programs. No cash will be accepted at the game, but the ACS will have pledge forms available. Learn how to do your part in the fight against breast cancer.

Before hosting the WBCA Pink Zone game this Sunday, the Gators are back in action at the O'Connell Center this Thursday night at 7 PM when they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. To honor National Women & Girls in Sports Day, the Gators are offering 2-for-1 admission for women of all ages.

What is the WBCA's "Pink Zone"?

The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event.
